The European Transparency Arena

Using nanotechnology as the case in question, the concept of a European Transparency Arena was discussed at a seminar in the European Parliament on March 5, 2008. The title for the seminar was "Who is really in charge of policy making in cutting edge technology?"

Cecilia Malmström, Minister for EU Affairs at the Swedish Prime Minister's Office talked about "The need for transparency and its political implications". Steffi Friedrichs, Director at the Nanotechnology Industries Association in the UK talked about "Nanotechnologies' promises - a new industrial revolution". Pat Mooney, Executive Director of the ETC Group, Canada argued in his talk that there should be a nanotech moratorium.
